The Mikkeli Music Festival will delight audiences with performances by top singers and choirs in several concerts. Here are some highlights:
SOLOISTS IN THE OPENING DAY CONCERTS AND OPEAR GALA
In the pre-concert on August 3rd, at 2:00 p.m. at Stella Shopping Centre, the South Savo Music Theater and Opera Association’s singers will interpret works by Giacomo Puccini and Oskar Merikanto. The concert will be hosted by Erkki Lasonpalo, the Artistic Director of the Mikkeli Music Festival.
The opening concert on August 3rd, at 8:00 p.m. will feature Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, with soloists Marika Hölttä, Anu Ontronen, and Timo Riihonen.
The Opera Gala on August 10th, at 8:00 p.m. will bring famous opera arias to life, performed by young international talents. The Philharmonia Orchestra will be conducted by Ville Matvejeff, also the Artistic Director of the Savonlinna Opera Festival.
CAPTIVATING CHOIR PERFORMANCES
The opening concert on August 3rd, at 8:00 p.m. features Luukas Hiltunen’s Scintillation, performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic Choir and the Saimaa Sinfonietta. Aliisa Neige Barriere as conductor.
On August 4th at 7:00 p.m. Lukas Stasevskij’s Game Music Collective Orchestra will collaborate with the male choir Alvar from Jyväskylä and soprano Iris Candelaria. Erkki Lasonpalo as conductor.
FEATURED SOPRANO IRIS CANDELARIA
Iris Candelaria, the winner of the 2023 Lappeenranta Singing Competition, will enchant audiences in two concerts: August afternoon dreams on August 4th, at 3:00 p.m., where she’ll perform alongside pianist Jukka Nykänen, and the Game Music Collective Orchestra’s game music concert on the same evening.
BARITONE WALTTERI TORIKKA WITH THE MIKKELI CITY ORCHESTRA
Beloved baritone Waltteri Torikka will present classical, uplifting melodies from baroque music, cantatas, and opera arias on August 7th, at 7:00 p.m. in Pitäjänkirkko Church.
