The City of Mikkeli in the heart of Finnish Lakeland was established in 1838. Mikkeli has a lively history and culture as the meeting point between East and West in the 18th and 19th century and as headquarters during three wars in the 20th century. The many historical manor houses in the region tell about the life of the gentry and Lake Saimaa as well as the rare natural sites about nature's force during the ice age. The local food draws from the rich, pure ingredients from the Lake Saimaa nature. It is no wonder, therefore, that the Mikkeli region is the most popular region for holiday residents with more than 10 500 holiday homes.
